Still Waters

I always thought that Pa Cowart's, or my grandfather's (JPC, Sr.) still was down by the Chattahoochee next to the watermelon patch. Today, Daddy (JPC, Jr.) told me that the "old man's", that's how he always refers to his grandfather, still was up in Hiawassee, Ga. That John and he, with his little red wagon, were more like distributors.
Who knows where they stashed their "product"? Hint: There's more than one place.
Who knows, besides the above mentioned endeavor, did the enterprising T. David Cowart run to generate income?
Who knows what happened to his sister "Texas" after their move to Atlanta. The arrival story is a good one. Details soon.
What other facts & legends are we losing by not sharing them with each other?
Ask an elder about the old days. See what you learn.

Hey there Cuz!

Welcome to the cyber-extension of our Cowart Reunion!
This will be a forum (a group Blog) for us to continue & deepen our connections.
In future posts, we'll give Reunion Information, have a section for News, Prayers & Praises, Family History, and a Spotlight on a Sibling. In these sections, current information will be exchanged, background of this Cowart branch 19th century & prior will be explored, as well as a detailing of each branch of our own tree. Lots of photographs will be included of members, grave sites, and important places with map links. We also will include beloved recipes (Henry Mitchell's pineapple cake :-D) and trivia questions. This will allow those of us who can't make it to the reunions in person to get in on the fun!
First, all you need to do is join and start participating! When you are ready, you'll be made an author and can load content yourself!
I don't mean to rush ya, but I'll be in the car!

Thomas David Cowart

Here's a photo of T. David Cowart. Which of his ancestors looks most like him today? I am out of the running because I removed my chin hairs this morning!

Speaking of genuine beauty, does anyone have a photo of Nancy Cowart? I can't remember ever seeing one. Which of the eight sisters resembled her most?

Coward Cake sets sail....

Here is an accurate as possible Family History of the Coward/Cowarts from various sources. If anyone has names, dates, anecdotes, please feel free to add them to the mix.
  • The parents of our Coward ancestor were:
  • JOHN COWARD & Maybee CAKE ca. 1721-ca. 1785. John Coward was born to John Coward & Elizabeth Wimberly GRIFFIN about 1721. He married Maybee CAKE about 1717, and to their union had three sons:
  • William
  • John
  • James Sr. married Miss Weaver (Our ancestors)
  • James Coward Sr. was born to John Coward & Maybee CAKE about 1753, possibly in Dorsetshire, England. He is thought to have come originally from England to Charles County, Maryland, then to Virginia, and finally to North Carolina. In the book CAROLINA CRADLE, he is referred to as a "Pioneer from Charles County, Maryland." 1 James Coward, age 21, came from the Port of London to Maryland, on the ship: 'Chance'. Date 2-9 1774. His occupation: gardener. He is from Dorsetshire, and came as an indentured servant. At age 32, he was awarded a land grant which amounted to almost the whole Walnut County* watershed in the Green River Valley. Some of this land remained in the Cowart family until several years ago. The last 800 acres was sold to the Champion Paper Company. (*Can Find no Walnut County. Green River Valley located in Henderson County, N.C.)
  • He married a Miss WEAVER (daughter of Samuel Weaver) around 1772. They had eleven children, and they are:
  • Johnathan Sr. married Martha HUTSON (our ancestors)
  • Margaret? married Abraham CHASTAIN
  • Peter married Nancy DIMSDALE
  • Sarah married David COCKERHAM
  • Benjamin married Elizabeth LAUGHTER
  • James Jr. married Mary WORLEY
  • Female Coward
  • Millicent Coward
  • Stephen married Amelia (Millie) ROGERS
  • Rebecca married Obadiah WORLEY
  • Elihu married Mary CHASTAIN
Will pick up with Johnathon Coward, Sr. next post.

Prayers for Mike Cowart

Beloved cousin, Mike Cowart (John P. & Sally M. Cowart) has been diagnosed with cancer. It has metastasized. He is at home receiving loving care from his wife Lisa, and family. Please join me in asking the Lord for a miracle. Please let the breath of the Lord now breath on Mike, a decent man and loving father. Amen.

Prayers for healing....

As you probably already know, Roger Cowart (Doc & Jesse Cowart) went in for knee replacement surgery recently. While closing, the surgeon discovered a crack in the bone that the artificial knee is attached to. So, Roger is currently in rehab at Delmar Gardens in Smyrna. He has good days and bad, as expected, but his spirit is ferocious and his attitude is buoyant! Let's send our prayers up for Roger's quick and full recovery.
UPDATE:
Roger leaves Rehab this Thursday, headed home! He will be care for by his firefighter buddies, Brother-in-Law Henry Mitchell, Sister Norma & Niece Ginger.
